What is Lortab?
Lortab is a combination medicine that helps in relieving pain. It contains hydrocodone, an opioid pain reliever, and acetaminophen, a non-opioid pain reliever.
Hydrocodone is a drug that works in the brain to alter how your body feels and responds to pain. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever that increases the effects of hydrocodone.
Lortab helps in relieving moderate to severe pain.
How to take Lortab?
Take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. Make sure to follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in high amounts or for longer than the prescribed duration. It may lead to an overdose which can damage your liver or cause death.
Before having any surgery or medical tests, tell the doctor that you are using Lortab.
Do not stop using this drug suddenly because you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The risk of withdrawal is more likely in people who use Lortab in high doses or for a long time. The withdrawal symptoms include restlessness, mood changes, nausea, diarrhea, runny nose, watering eyes, muscle aches, sweating, or sudden behavior changes.
Lortab can cause an addiction, and the risk is high in people who have a history of drug or alcohol addiction. Take Lortab as directed by your doctor to lower the risk.
What to know before taking Lortab?
Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are allergic to acetaminophen or hydrocodone or have recently used sedatives, alcohol, tranquilizers, and other narcotic medicines.
Avoid using this medicine if you have used MAO inhibitors in the past 14 days. It could lead to a dangerous drug interaction. The MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.
Some drugs can interact with hydrocodone and cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Tell your doctor if you also take the following medications:
- medicine for depression
- medicine for mental illness
- treatment for Parkinson’s disease
- medicine for migraine headaches
- medicine for serious infections
- treatment for prevention of nausea and vomiting
To make sure that this drug is safe for you, tell your doctor if you ever had the following conditions:
- liver disease
- diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, or severe constipation
- a history of drug or alcohol addiction
- kidney disease
- low blood pressure
- head injury, brain tumor, or stroke
- asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and other breathing disorders
- if you use a sedative like Valium such as diazepam, alprazolam, lorazepam, Ativan, Klonopin, Restoril, Tranxene, Xanax, etc.
This drug can cause breathing problems in older adults and people who are severely ill or malnourished.
Do not use narcotic medicines while you are pregnant because your baby could become dependent on the drug. Doing so can cause withdrawal symptoms in the baby after it is born.
Do not breastfeed while using Lortab. The drug acetaminophen and hydrocodone can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
What are the benefits of using Lortab?

What are the side effects of Lortab?
Call the emergency medical help if you sign an allergic reaction to Lortab:hives: difficulty breathing: swelling of your face, lips, throat.
In some cases, Lortab may cause a serious skin reaction that can be fatal. This will occur even if you have taken Lortab in the past and had no reaction. Stop using Lortab and call your pharmacist right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes extreme and peeling. If you have this type of symptoms you should never again take any medicine that contains acetaminophen.
Ask your doctor at once if you have:
- Slow heartbeat
- Light-headed through or behavior
- Seizure (convulsion)
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Impotence, sexual problems, loss of interest in sex,
- Liver problem-upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice.
- Low cortisol levels-nausea vomiting, dizziness, worsening tiredness, or weakness.
Seek medical right away if you have symptoms of e syndrome, such as agitation, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness – loss of coordination, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Some common Lortab side effects include:
- Headache, drowsiness
- upset Stomach
- Blurred Vision
- Dry mouth
What to avoid while using Lortab?
This medicine may impair your thinking or response. Avoid driving or operating machinery. You know how Lortab will affect you. Dizziness or severe drowsiness can cause falls or other accidents.
Ask your pharmacist before using any other cold, pain, or sleep medication. Acetaminophen is contained in many mixture medicines. Taking many products together can cause you to get too much acetaminophen, leading to a fatal overdose.
Avoid drinking alcohol. It may increase your risk of liver damage while taking Lortab.
